The Reproductive System
The main purpose of the reproductive
system for the survival of the species. Other body
systems such as the endocrine and excretory systems,
work together with the reproductive system to maintain
homeostasis. Within the context of producing offspring,
the reproductive system has four functions:
- To produce egg and sperm cells
- To transport and sustain these cells
- To nurture the developing offspring
- To produce hormones
These duties are divided among the primary and
secondary, or accessory, reproductive organs. The
ovaries in the female, and the testes in the male are
the
primary reproductive organs, or gonads. These primary organs are responsible for
producing the egg and sperm cells, or gametes, and
hormone production. The purpose of hormones is to aid in
the maturation of the reproductive system, promote the
development
of sexual characteristics, and regulate the normal physiology of the reproductive
system. All of the other reproductive system's organs, ducts, and glands are considered secondary, or
accessory, reproductive organs. These structures
are used in transport and for sustaining the gametes and
as well as nuturing the
developing offspring.
